Camphor oil is produced in 3 fractions known as white, yellow and brown camphor.
Only the white camphor oil is used, it has a clear and fresh smell. The brown and yellow camphor is toxic and therefore not used in aromatherapy.
Origin
Camphor originated
in Formosa (Taiwan), China and Japan.
Extraction
Camphor oil is extracted by steam distillation from the the chipped wood, root stumps and branches of the camphor plant. It is then rectified under vacuum and filter pressed.
Chemical composition
Cineol, Camphor, Borneol, Camphene, Menthol, Borneol, Pinene, and Dipentene.
Since this oil can be highly toxic, it should never be used in aromatherapy massage, but can be used in vapour therapy to decrease respiratory problems.
Camphor oil is a powerful oil and should be used with care.
Overdosing can cause convulsions and vomiting.
Pregnant women or persons suffering from epilepsy and asthma should not use it.
