Properties
Ginger essential oil  varies in colour from light yellow to a dark amber colour. Its viscosity also ranges from medium to watery. It has a strong smell likely spicy, sharp, warm and with a hint of lemon and pepper.
Origin
It originated in India, China and Java.
Extraction
The oil is extracted using steam distillation.
Chemical composition
A-pinene, camphene, b-pinene, 1,8-cineole, linalool, borneol, y-terpineol, nerol, neral, geraniol, geranial, geranyl acetate, b-bisabolene and zingiberene.
Therapeutic properties
Analgesic, anti-emetic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, bactericidal, carminative, cephalic, expectorant, febrifuge, laxative, rubefacient, stimulant, stomachic, sudorific and tonic.
Uses
Ginger oil is used in the treatment of :
  1. fractures
  2. rheumatism
  3. arthritis
  4. bruising
  5. carbuncles
  6. nausea
  7. hangovers
  8. travel and sea sickness
  9. colds and flu
  10. catarrh
  11. congestion
  12. coughs
  13. sinusitis
  14. sores on the skin
  15. sore throat
  16. diarrhea
  17. colic
  18. cramps
  19. chills and fever.
Precautions
  • Ginger oil is non-toxic and non-irritant (except when used in high concentrations) but could irritate sensitive skins.
  • It can also cause photosensitivity.
  • Avoid using in sun.
Blends with
bergamot, neroli, sandalwood, ylang-ylang, and other spice oils.
